Have you been harboring dreams of starting a new career, launching a business or taking on a new life challenge but lacking the confidence to get started? Committing to something new is scary - fact! Our brains are hardwired to favor the status-quo and often work overtime to resist any change. So if you’re currently experiencing self-doubt and uncertainty about pursuing a dream then rest-assured that you’re like the 99.9% of the rest of us. So how do you overcome this mindset and find your mojo?

Tune in

Understanding the root cause of your fear is the first step. The next time self-doubt and negative thoughts come into your mind, don’t try to suppress them and instead, listen up. Pay attention to your specific concerns or worries and see if you can address them practically. Also, a great trick is to list out the worst case scenario of making the change – be very specific – and then list out the worst case scenario if you do nothing and stick with the status quo.

Do a beta test

Confidence comes from action and experience. The best way to grow, therefore, is to find a way to dip your toe in before taking the plunge. Depending on your ambition, you could consider work experience, volunteering, doing a project for free or starting a small side-hustle. You’ll find the scary and unfamiliar will soon feel comfortable.

Set small goals

Rather than focusing on the ultimate change you want to make, instead, put your energy into mapping out the steps you need to take to get there. This may be choosing a domain name, writing a brand vision or researching your ideal customer. Log these mini-goals and set a deadline to complete each one. This will help make the journey seem far more manageable and you’ll be whizzing along before you know it.

Find your tribe

I’m a huge believer in the power and potential of a supportive network. Brainstorm ideas for how you can connect with people who have taken the path you wish to - this could be Facebook groups, family connections, Meetup groups. Don’t try to go it alone and instead learn from others’ experience and benefit from their mentorship.
